What to check out in Centrifugal Pumps?

• Apart from daily visual inspections, Fresh Gland Packing is checked monthly. If leakage is found from gland, same is required to be tightened.


• Coupling alignment and integrity is to be checked monthly .


• Tightness of foundation and "hold down bolts" is to be checked every 6 months.


• Both DE and NDE side bearing greasing and coupling greasing is to be done in 6 months.


• Shaft, sleeve, short sleeve, neck ring and impeller are to be checked after openeing top cover of pump every year.


• Every year running clearance of impeller is to be checked.


• Non -Return-Valve is to be checked every 6 months.


• Packing and greasing of sluice valve is to be carried out every 6 months.

Filter House CLW

Water comes from Sidhabari pump house travelling through 12 KM pipelines. There are 13 centrifugal pumps ( 4 pumps are 189 cubic m/hr, 6 pumps are 225 cubic m/hr, and 3 are 227.3 cubic m /hr ). All these 75 kw pumps are 60 m head with motor efficiencies 92% and 1460 rpm.

Sewerage Treatment Plant

CLW has a huge sewerage treatment plant commissioned in 1951. It has two high capacity compressors.

Timer controlled street light

To control 3500 street lights, we have provided some timers.

Hill and Hospital Area( 900 quarters)

There are 17 street light feeders.

• TS-14 ( 8 feeders) suplies to 110 street lights.





• TS-16 ( 1 Feeder) supplies to 120 street lights.





• TS-26 ( 2 feeders) supplies to 120 street lights.





• TS-26 A ( 6 feeders) supplies to 80 street lights.This is yet to be fitted with timer.

SP N & F Area ( 3333 quarters )

This area has 10 street light feeders:-

• TS- 20 supplies to 256 street jights.





• TS- 21 supplies to 105 street lights.





• TS-24 supplies to 103 street lights.





• TS-25 supplies to 105 street lights.





• TS-32 supplies to 67 street lights.





• TS-3 supplies to 135 street lights. This is the only TS that has 2 feeders. Rest all TS have only sinle street light feeder.

Main Substation

• Transformer earthing with ACSR conductor needs to be replaced with copper/MS .


• Earth pits cover are required.


• Earth Mesh diagaram is needed.


• Neutral link needs to be monitored for being adequate or open/close.


• Silica gel needs to be made stock item.


• Capacitor banks and reactors needed to be kept healthy.


• One 33 kv/ 25 kv power transformer for traction is lying spare.


• 11 KV lines running over diesel tanks need to be removed.

CPH Control Room

• Some point annunciators are defective.


• The electromagnetic type protective relays need to be testsed for settings, or may be need replacement with numeric type relays.


• Some spare cables need connection with the switchgear.


• Cables of feeder # 22 and feeder # 17 need rectification.


• 110 V DC battery room which caters to 32 HT panels should be kept in good fettle.


• HT control room wiring needs to be tightened.


• Two 415 V Sirens are run daily and recird needs to be kept.


• JE and SBA who man the control room should record closing of circuit breaker.


• Fault segregation chart needs to be prepared.

Substations inside workshop

There are 24 substations( 11 KV/ 440 V) inside the workshop in CLW.

• 6 are in mail assembly ( A,A1,B,NEW,C, C1)


• 7 are in ELP ( L,K,N,P,TDK Test Plant,Area Test Plant and T3)


• 3 are in HMS ( E , G, G1)


• 2 are in shop 19 ( M, T2)


• 2 are in SFS ( H1,H2)


• 1 in Paint Shop .


• 1 in Tm coil shop ( VP1)


• 1 in LMS (D)

Transformers are 1000 KVA and 750 KVA of various makes ( Voltamp, AREVA, Surya ). The LT side line current varies from 400 A to 1000 A.

1750 KW DG Sets in CLW

• CLW has 6 nos 1750 KW DG sets for emergency power supply. The power packs are provided with EGB - 13 P type engine governor. These governors have been suggested to be replaced by PG type EM governor ( such as that of M/S Woodward).




• DG 4 in CPH ( !987) is to be condenmed. CEE has lready approved. Survey could not be finalised for want of copper content.




• DG 5 ( 1995 ) in CPH is shut down since 2004 for want a pedestal bearing ( BHEL ) of AVR with brush and separate excitation.



• DG-2 (1978) is shut down since last 1 month due to 11 KV cable fault.



• Recently Jamalpur workshop has given quotation for IOH ( M-48) and POH (M-96).

DVC Electricity Bill

• Maximum Demand:- 11 MVA


• Capacity Charge:- @ 106.96 paise per unit.


• Energy Charge :- @ 86.26 Paise per unit.


• Fuel Charge :- @ 104.08 paise per unit.


• E. Duty:- 15 %

Some high cost developmental options ( payback> 24 months) for Energy Efficiency

• To install VFDs in all AHU motors to get speed and flow as per cooling requirement.




• To overhaul bowl assembly, impellers thoroughly for less efficient Sidhabari pump#2 for achieving the desined efficiency of 75 % . ( Done?)




• To install contact type on-line flow meter on supply lines of Sidhabari pumps.( Tender Opened ?)




• To provide electronic ballasts ( 60 % conventional replaced).




• To provide occupancy sensors.




• To replace 90 W ceiling fans with EE 60 W fans.
